Job description

At Oshkosh, we build, serve and protect people and communities around the world by designing and manufacturing some of the toughest specialty trucks and access equipment. We employ over 18,000 team members all united by a common purpose. Our engineering and product innovation help keep soldiers and firefighters safe, is critical in building and keeping communities clean and helps people do their jobs every day. The Sr. Engineer – Software Systems defines and develops software requirements, software architecture, interfaces, and design validation for vehicle and embedded software systems. This role converts customer, vehicle, system, product, safety, and regulatory needs into complete and verifiable software solutions. YOUR IMPACT: Develop, review, approval, and release of software architecture and requirements specifications. Analyze customer, stakeholder, vehicle, system, safety, and regulatory requirements and decompose them into software-level requirements, architectural constraints, interfaces, and verification criteria. Develop and maintain software architecture models that define: Software components and responsibilities Functional allocation Internal and external interfaces Data and control flows Operating modes and state behavior Network communication Timing, performance, memory, and resource constraints Fault detection, diagnostics, and degraded-operation behavior Preform architectural trade studies and recommend solutions based on functionality, performance, reliability, safety, cybersecurity, maintainability, reuse, implementation complexity, and lifecycle cost. Define standard software interfaces between vehicle controllers, displays, sensors, actuators, gateways, controls applications, and external systems. Participate in design reviews and document findings, risks, actions, and recommendations. Support safety analyses such as Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment, Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, and Fault Tree Analysis. Work with systems engineers, controls engineers, developers, and functional safety engineers to develop software and system safety architectures. Work with implementation teams to clarify requirements, interfaces, safety constraints, and architectural intent. Review supplier requirements, software architecture, detailed designs, verification plans, and compliance evidence. Assess the technical impact of proposed changes across software components, interfaces, safety analyses, verification activities, vehicle functions, and dependent systems. Apply model-based systems and software engineering methods, including UML and SysML, where appropriate. Build consensus across software, systems, controls, hardware, safety, cybersecurity, test, manufacturing, service, and supplier organizations. Manage multiple priorities and complete assigned projects or portions of projects within established schedule and budget objectives. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Accredited bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering field. Three or more years of related experience in software systems engineering, embedded software, vehicle systems, software architecture, requirements engineering, functional safety, or a comparable discipline. Experience developing and reviewing software requirements and software architecture. Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout a structured product-development lifecycle. Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively through written documentation, presentations, and technical discussions. STANDOUT QUALIFICATIONS: Accredited Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering field. Experience with embedded software for automotive, commercial, defense, heavy-duty, off-highway, autonomous, hybrid, or electric vehicles. Five or more years of vehicle or embedded-system requirements development experience. Experience with requirements development, architecture definition, interface management, safety analysis, or software design reviews. Proficiency with requirements-management, safety-analysis, and architecture-modeling tools such as: MagicDraw or Cameo IBM DOORS Medini Analyze Similar Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) or lifecycle management tools Experience developing architecture models using UML, SysML, or comparable modeling languages. Experience with functional safety standards and practices, including ISO 26262, MIL-STD-882, IEC 61508. Familiarity with embedded C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow, Python, or model-based software development. Experience with vehicle network protocols and tools, including CAN, J1939, Ethernet, CANalyzer, CANoe, PEAK PCAN, Kvaser, or similar tools. Familiarity with cybersecurity concepts and standards, including ISO/SAE 21434 or comparable standards. Experience working within CMMI, Automotive SPICE, or another structured engineering-development process. CORE COMPETENCIES: Internal Contacts: Contact with peers and others involving explanation of information (these contacts may be within or outside department or division), and the gathering of factual information; may include the communication of sensitive or confidential information. External Contacts: External contact to gather information, answer queries, or ask assistance. Communication Skills: Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; Write routine reports, correspondence and speak effectively before both internal and external groups; Read, analyze and interpret business manuals, technical procedures and/or government regulations: Read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.
