Position Summary The Lead HVAC Technician will oversee and perform comprehensive maintenance, repair, and optimization of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across Tennessee State University's campus. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a commitment to maintaining optimal environmental conditions that support the university's academic mission. The Lead HVAC Technician will coordinate daily HVAC operations, mentor junior technicians, and ensure all systems operate efficiently and reliably. Key Responsibilities Technical Operations Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of HVAC systems including chillers, boilers, air handlers, rooftop units, split systems, and building automation systems Diagnose and resolve complex HVAC issues efficiently to minimize downtime and maintain occupant comfort Monitor and optimize building automation systems (BAS) to ensure energy-efficient operations Conduct regular inspections of HVAC equipment and systems to identify potential issues before they become critical Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and system performance metrics Leadership and Supervision Lead and coordinate daily work assignments for HVAC technicians and support staff Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior technicians Review work quality and ensure all tasks meet JLL and university standards Collaborate with the Senior Chief Engineer on project planning, staffing, and resource allocation Participate in emergency response coordination for HVAC-related incidents Compliance and Safety Ensure all work complies with applicable codes, regulations, and safety standards including OSHA requirements Maintain EPA certifications and ensure proper refrigerant handling and documentation Conduct safety briefings and enforce proper use of personal protective equipment Support energy conservation initiatives and sustainability goals Customer Service Respond promptly to work orders and service requests from university faculty, staff, and students Communicate effectively with building occupants regarding planned maintenance and system status Collaborate with university stakeholders to address HVAC-related concerns and improve service delivery Qualifications Required: High school diploma or equivalent Minimum 5-7 years of commercial HVAC experience, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity EPA Universal Certification (required) Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and building automation systems Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals Proficient troubleshooting and diagnostic skills Valid driver's license with clean driving record Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong communication and interpersonal skills Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environmental conditions Preferred: Associate degree or technical certification in HVAC, Mechanical Systems, or related field Experience in higher education or institutional facilities HVAC Excellence or NATE certification Building Automation Systems certification (Tridium, Johnson Controls, Siemens, or similar) Boiler or chiller operator license Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) Work Environment This position requires work in various indoor and outdoor environments including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and occupied spaces. The role involves exposure to varying temperatures, heights, confined spaces, and noise. On-call rotation and occasional weekend or evening work may be required to support critical operations.
